What is TYPE II face mask?

The face mask is worn to stop inhaling harmful particles and droplets, including coronavirus. Different types offer varying levels of protection for different purposes- these are used in the fight against bacteria or viruses that can cause nasty respiratory diseases.

The Type II face mask (EN14683) is a kind of medical masks, with 3 layer protective fabric. That could help to prevent most particles from contacting with the patient or work environment.

Type II - EN14683 masks are appropriate for situations where exposure to blood and/or bodily fluids from the patient or work environment is not a risk. These types of protection can be used by healthcare workers in hospitals, doctor's offices, schools etc.

What are the different grades of face masks?

Face masks come in different grades or levels of protection, which are often categorized by various standards and organizations. These grades or levels indicate the mask's ability to provide a barrier against different types of airborne particles and pathogens. The specific terminology and grading system may vary by region and industry. However, some common grading systems and types of face masks include:

Surgical Masks:

Surgical masks are disposable, loose-fitting face masks primarily designed to protect the patient from respiratory droplets and the wearer from large particles and splashes of bodily fluids. They are not designed for respiratory protection.

In the United States, surgical masks are classified by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) into three levels:

ASTM Level 1: Low barrier protection

ASTM Level 2: Moderate barrier protection

ASTM Level 3: High barrier protection

Respirators:

Respirators are designed to protect the wearer from airborne particles, including dust, pathogens, and other contaminants. They offer a higher level of filtration and fit than surgical masks. Common types include:

N95 Respirators: Filter at least 95% of airborne particles. They are certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the United States.

FFP Masks: FFP (Filtering Facepiece Particles) masks are European standards for respirators and are categorized as FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3, with FFP3 providing the highest level of protection.

Non-Medical or Cloth Masks:

Non-medical or cloth masks are typically made of fabric and can be used by the general public for source control (to prevent respiratory droplets from being released) and to some extent for personal protection.

Cloth masks can vary in the number of layers, the type of fabric used, and their ability to filter particles. The filtration efficiency may not be as high as surgical masks or respirators.

KN95 Masks:

KN95 masks are similar to N95 respirators and provide a high level of filtration (at least 95% of airborne particles). They are commonly used in China and other countries.

P2 and P3 Masks:

P2 and P3 masks are Australian/New Zealand standards for respirators, similar to FFP2 and FFP3, providing varying levels of protection against airborne particles.

Community Masks:

In some countries, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, community masks or face coverings have been introduced to be worn by the general public. These masks are not typically designed to meet medical or industrial standards but serve as a preventive measure to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets.

The choice of face mask should be based on the specific application, the level of protection required, and the guidelines or regulations in your region. It's important to understand the intended purpose of the mask, its level of filtration, and its proper use and fit to ensure effective protection. Additionally, masks should be used in conjunction with other preventive measures, such as hand hygiene and physical distancing, as appropriate.
